I’m based in Houston, Texas where I am a Soloist with the Houston Ballet. I began choreographing in 2018, I participated in a workshop for women only called “choreograp(her)”. I thought I was just trying on a hat to see if I enjoyed the process. I should have realized that I had a passion for it when I came to the table to create a 15 minute ballet. My piece was unfinished, but following the workshop the pas de deux “it just keeps going” was chosen to be performed by the Houston Ballet at the Miller Outdoor Theater. This experience rekindled a creative spirit I have always had and started my journey as a choreographer. I have since created a commissioned work for Houston Ballet “Illuminate”, which returns to the Wortham this Fall. I am learning and working hard to navigate the start of this new career while still balancing being a full time dancer. I have many ideas I’d like to pursue and I look forward to continuing my growth as a choreographer.
I have created six professional works
o Saudade, Houston Ballet II, 2025
o Illuminate, Houston Ballet, 2023 (returning 2025)
o Mechanisms, Houston Ballet, 2022
o Before we go, Houston Ballet II, 2021-2022
o Good Things, Ballet Virginia, 2021
o It just keeps going, HB workshop, 2018

“In the main company, soloist Jacquelyn Long “made a lovely piece for us,” Welch adds. “She’s young and fearless, and that’s exactly what we want.”
